The library was quiet except for the occasional thud of a book hitting the floor and Dessa’s frustrated little sighs. The heavy scent of parchment and aged wood surrounded us, mingling with the faint, lingering aroma of herbs from the teapot I’d left simmering on the furthest table. Sunlight filtered through the tall windows, painting golden rectangles on the rows of shelves. Dessa strutted back and forth in the middle of the room, balancing a thick, leather-bound tome on her head like it was some royal headdress. It didn’t last more than a few seconds before it slipped and clattered onto the polished floor. Her hot-pink dress beaded with shimmering diamonds billowed around her as she flopped onto the floor, scooting herself towards the fallen book.

She threw her hands in the air and huffed in distress, muttering, “I’m never going to be a proper lady.” The pout on her young face made me smile despite the ache curling in my chest. She stomped over to the table where I sat, watching her with an absent gaze.

The truth was, my mind wasn’t on the lessons or the library or even Dessa. It was tangled up in Cyrus, King Cyrus, the man who had slipped into my bed, touched me with a tenderness that made my skin hum, and then disappeared behind a wall of cold lies. The same man who was betrothed to another, yet hadn’t found it necessary to tell me himself. I felt like a shadow in his life, a secret kept tucked away and hidden from the daylight. His engagement was a wound I couldn’t stop nursing, no matter how much I tried to tell myself I didn’t care.

But I did care. That tether between us, the fragile string that pulled tighter with every stolen glance and whispered word, refused to break. It coiled closer, threatening to strangle us both in its grip. I hated it, hated how much I felt for someone I barely knew, and especially hated myself for being so damn infuriated by it. We were enemies in this game, or at least we were supposed to be, bound by duty and betrayal. I was supposed to be his downfall, the secret blade at his back, not the girl wishing for a softer ending.

Dessa’s voice cut through my spiraling thoughts. “Try again,” I said softly, reaching out to gently pat her back. I carefully lifted the book from the floor and set it back atop her head. “Squeeze your stomach muscles a little more to help you balance. A princess walks with grace and poise. She stands tall, an unwavering force to behold.” I tickled her ribs lightly, and she squealed, dodging away like a flash of sunlight escaping the shadow. “Focus, Dessa. You can do this.” I should be the one taking my own damn advice…

She attempted again, the book wobbling wildly before falling once more. She groaned in frustration, the sound sweet in its honesty. I couldn’t help but chuckle, finding comfort in her earnestness and the simplicity of her troubles.
